We are all looking for something or someone to blame, when it comes to our weight and body. If I could have a dime for every time that I heard you will never be able to completely lose your pregnancy weight and be as fit as you were pre-pregnancy, I would be rich today, and if I would let myself get convinced with this myth, I would not lose the pregnancy weight.

Are you ready to get to the bottom of all these blame?

The fact is yes, we can blame our food industry, our parents, our jobs, our kids, and a lot more for our weight problems. Yes, they do play a role in how our bodies burn calories and where it stores them. But we can completely control them. If our body was a house, then genetics, kids, job, food, etc. would be the rentals and you would be the landlord. You as a landlord decide and control how your rentals will treat your house. If they are trashing your house, then you would give them a warning and watch them closely. You wouldn’t say, it is what it is and let them take over, would you?

Let’s start with genes, which probably are the hardest to change. It is true that our genes are important when it comes to our health and they determine if we are at higher risk for certain disease, but not as much when it comes to our weight. Looking at this trough the eyes of a hiring manager, genetics are applicants for your open position, and you are the one who has control over who to hire and how to train them. You might be prone to gain weight faster than your friend eating the same amount of food, but you can change this by building more muscles. Here are a fact muscle burns a lot more calories than fat does; so the more muscle you have in your body, the more calories you’ll burn even when you are sleeping.  So if you are blaming your genetics and your slow metabolism for not being able to lose those extra pounds, then you better promote and hire more muscles in your body. Also pay attention that you need to fuel these muscles with healthy and nutritious foods; just as a good manager, who would train and provide necessary tools for the new employees to ensure their success.

How about our food? It seems like there are temptations everywhere to eat unhealthy foods. It is much easier to find unhealthy foods. You can find junk foods everywhere, even in our so called health food stores. Why? Don’t get mad of me when I say it is our own fault. I say it is our fault because we buy them. Here is what we need to do. Instead of blaming our food industry and advertisement, let’s educate ourselves and take control over what we put in our bodies. Next time when you are offered a sugary drink or a cup of water, choose the water. When you are offered rice or quinoa, go with the quinoa. We, as consumers, have the upper hand. You choose what to buy and what to eat, so don’t let pretty labeling and convenient packaging fool you. Do your research before buying your food.

If you have a job that requires you to sit all day behind a computer or answer phone calls, it will be easy to blame your job for your weight gain because your physical activities are very limited. So what can you do about it? While lots of companies will not let you to sit on a stability ball, which some experts will suggest, due to its hazardous nature, but I have not seen any company that will not allow you to stand up while answering those phone calls or typing, you just need a desk that is high enough, so you are not hurting your back. Even if that is not an option, be aware of your posture while sitting and make an effort to take a 2 minute walk around your office every hour. It actually helps you to refresh your brain and be able to become more productive.

This last issue is big for lots of women out there, gaining weight and not being able to lose it due to pregnancy. It almost seems like it is only for celebrities or very rich people, who can afford a personal trainer. Again, you have the control. Yes, it is hard to lose all that extra lbs, yes, it is hard to get your stretched stomach, toned, yes, it is hard to find the time to exercise and take care of yourself, but it is not impossible. You have to change your mindset. You have to want to get your body back. No, you do not need to hire a personal trainer, it sure will help, if you can afford one, but it is not necessary. You do not need to go through expensive plastic surgeries. All you need is to exercise and eat healthy and be consistent about it. Remember, it will not happen overnight.

Bottom line:

  1. Change your mindset and stop blaming others for your weight problems
  2. Take control over your body, you are the landlord, you are the hiring manager so make wise decisions
  3. Educate, educate, and even more educate, when it comes to your health and your body, you will never be done learning new things
  4. Changing and training your body will require hard work, but it is an investment that you will never regret. I have not seen anyone who said, “I wish I was less healthy or less fit”.
  5. You don’t need to be rich to be fit. You can be fit for free. There are tons and tons of activities that you can do for free and build muscle.
