Ginger is the underground rhizome of the ginger plant with a firm, striated texture. The flesh of the ginger rhizome can be yellow, white or red in color, depending upon the variety. It is covered with a brownish skin that may either be thick or thin, depending upon whether the plant was harvested when it was mature or young.

  1. Ginger is high in Gingerol, a substance with powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties (1)
  2. Ginger is highly effective against nausea (2) specially pregnancy related nausea, such as morning sickness (3)
  3. Ginger may be indirectly effective in reducing the day-to-day progression of muscle pain due to exercise (4). These effects are due to anti-inflammatory properties of ginger.
  4. Ginger has been shown to lower blood sugar levels. In a study, 41 patients with type 2 diabetes were given 2g of ginger powder a day for 12 weeks. The result was 12% lower fasting blood sugar after the 12 weeks (5).
  5. Ginger may lower Cholesterol- in a study 85 individuals with high Cholesterol were given 3 grams of ginger powder for 45 days, and the result was a significant reduction in most cholesterol markers (6)

Turmeric is a rhizomatous herbaceous perennial plant of the ginger family, Zingiberaceae. It is native to southern Asia, requiring temperatures between 20 and 30 °C and a considerable amount of annual rainfall to thrive. Turmeric has been used in Indian and Asian cuisine.

  1. Turmeric protects your liver-one study suggests that Curcumin, the yellow pigment of spice Turmeric, can help delaying liver damage and protect liver against potential liver damage (7).
  2. Turmeric can help slow down the aging process- a study shows that turmeric helps prevent premature aging by preventing DNA damage and stimulating DNA repair (8).
  3. Turmeric decreases heartburn- Turmeric plant supplements are effective at decreasing indigestion and heartburn symptoms due to the anti-inflammatory properties of curcumin (9).
  4. Turmeric helps control blood sugar- a study shows that Turmeric improves glucose intake by the liver and suppress glucose production, and reduces the long term diabetic complications (10)
  5. Turmeric lowers LDL (bad Cholesterol)- study has shown that Turmeric help to keep the cholesterol levels in check and lower LDL (11).

My Turmeric/ Ginger water recipe:


1/2 Tsp grated fresh Turmeric (you can use powder turmeric instead)

1 Tsp grated fresh Ginger (you can use Ginger powder instead)

1 pinch of freshly grounded black pepper

Juice of 1/2 Lime

22 ounce Water

2-3 drops Olive or Avocado oil

1 T-sac (or tea diffuser)

Optional: Raw honey to taste


  • Place grated turmeric, ginger and black pepper in a T-sac and place in a a cup, jar or bottle
  • Add Lime juice
  • Add water (room temperature)
  • Add oil
  • Optional: add Raw Honey to taste
  • Place in the fridge (if you like it cold) or leave at room temperature overnight

Drink a cup of this Turmeric, Ginger tea in the morning and throughout the day.

Note: Oil and black pepper are necessary in order to get Turmeric fully absorbed into your bloodstream.
